Farewell Hilda

After this weekend’s games, one of the greatest rugby players England have ever produced will hang up his boots.

Farewell, Richard Hill. Will we see your like again?

Never dropped by England, rated as consistently highly by his peers as a player can be, adored by the fans – the silent assassin, some players have such an instinctive feel for the game that they are perpetually in the right place at that right time. Such is Richard Hill.

Maybe even his greatest achievement is the hard work that he’s put in over the last three years with his knackered knee. Some cruciate replacements go well, some not so well. As one who has experienced the latter, I have some insight but can only imagine what he must have gone through to continue playing top level rugby. And not just making up the numbers – he nearly took Saracens to the Heineken Cup Final with his man of the match performances.

We, the england fans, salute you.
